Frogs win big at home

The TCU Horned Frogs volleyball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a dominating three-game sweep over Centenary Tuesday night in front of a raucous home crowd at the University Recreation Center.

The Frogs (14-4) cruised to an impressive win despite playing without junior opposite Ellen Rehme, TCU’s leader in blocks and kills, who was injured in last weekend’s tournament. Head coach Prentice Lewis was pleased with the team’s performance and the individual performance of freshman outside hitter Calli Corley, who filled in for Rehme.

“Everyone stepped up and played really well tonight,” Lewis said. “Calli was an excellent contributor. She hit .250 and Jenna Miller had 14 points. Those are the kind of numbers I’m looking for.

Miller lead the Frogs with 11 kills, and reigning Conference USA Player of the Week Dominika Szabo had 10 kills, despite sitting out most of the third game. Lewis said she decided to sit Szabo so other players could get some game experience.

After the Frogs took a big lead, Corley said the team was able to work on things that it had been going over in practice.

“I think we played pretty well, but it was great because it gave us the opportunity to work on some things like set plays,” Corley said. “I’m really happy to be where we are going into conference play.”

Although the Frogs came away with a relatively easy victory, Lewis said the Frogs know they have more work to do and will not let this victory go to their heads.

TCU takes on Tulane Friday, then travels to Hattiesburg, Miss. for a Saturday matchup with Southern Miss.
