CANCER

Students should run to raise money

Perhaps every once in awhile, TCU students should choose to look beyond whether the Main has a new vegetarian buffet or if their hair gets wet from the rain.

Many TCU students are participating in the 5K run/walk Candlelighter’s Night Run Saturday to raise money for children living with cancer. However, “many” in this case is probably not enough.

Candlelighter’s Childhood Cancer Foundation is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate and support families of children with cancer, as well as survivors of childhood cancer. The run, beginning at Sundance Square, helps raise money for those families who desperately need it for the upkeep of their children’s medical expenses.

Although recovery rates are steadily increasing, 35 percent of children who acquire cancer will die. These children will never have a chance to learn to drive, see rated “R” movies, go to their first prom or fall in love.

So the next time you’re frustrated about not finding a parking space at TCU, think a minute. Put it into prospective.

Sure, it’s easy to get caught up in the life and times of TCU’s campus. But it’s also easy to give up a couple of hours for a good cause. Late registration starts at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, so missing registration isn’t an excuse.

See you there with your tennis shoes on.
