Golf team claims its third-straight C-USA title

The men’s golf team picked up its third-straight conference championship and the program’s fifth in the last seven years. The fifth-ranked Frogs, who entered the day with a one-shot lead over Houston, defeated second-place Alabama-Birmingham by seven strokes at the 2003 Conference USA Men’s Golf Championships. Junior Adam Meyer paced TCU for the week, placing second individually, but all five golfers ranked placed among the top 21.

Meyer was one of just two players to finish the tournament under par. He posted a final-round 73 (+2) to finish with a one-under 212, three strokes off the pace of Charlotte’s Russell Killough (209). Meyer’s last round consisted of five birdies, and his play in the spring semester helped him earn first-team all-conference honors.

Adam Rubinson, who earned his third championship ring in his four seasons, finished in sole possession of sixth place with a one-over 214. He posted a 73 on the final day, and following the round, was named first-team all-conference as well as the Conference USA Golfer of the Year.

Colby Beckstrom, who was named C-USA Freshman of the Year, turned in a stellar round on Wednesday. His two-under 69 was highlighted by a difficult, downhill eight-foot par-saving putt on the eighth hole. With his performance, Beckstrom moved up from a tie for 40th into a tie for 18th.

Following the event, Montigel received his second consecutive Conference USA Coach of the Year award.

Highly-rated center signs with men’s basketball team

Head coach Neil Dougherty announced Thursday that the men’s basketball program signed 6-foot-9-inch, 250-pound center Femi Ibikunle from The New Hampton School in New Hampton, N.H. Ibikunle averaged 11.4 points, 12.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocked shots a game this past season.

In December, Bob Gibbons’ All-Star Report rated Ibikunle as the No. 4 unsigned big man in the nation.

Ibikunle, whose given first name is Oluwafemi, came to the United States in the summer of 2002. He selected TCU over Marquette, Iowa State and Oklahoma State.

Women’s golfer team ends up one stroke behind

Despite a 25-foot putt that gave sophomore D’Rae Ward Conference USA Championships medalist honors, the TCU Horned Frogs finished one stroke behind South Florida in the team race. The Horned Frogs posted a 15-over-par 303 on Wednesday, the team’s best round of the tournament, but the Bulls’ tourney-best 302 gave the host team the crown. The Horned Frogs made the turn at plus-four, but were 11 over on the back nine.

For Ward, it was her third tournament title of the spring and her career. She posted a two-over 74 on the final day and ended with a 224 (+8) for the event. Following the tournament, Ward earned second-team All-Conference USA honors.

Junior Brooke Tull, the 2002 C-USA medalist, tied for fourth place overall with a 54-hole score of 226.

Stephanie Godare, who was named to the all-freshman team, posted an 80 Wednesday and a 238 for the tournament. She tied for 21st place with her 22-over-par score. Fellow freshman Traci Robison shared 31st with a score of 245.
