House passes improvement bills, sets 2003 budget

Two campus improvement bills were passed unanimously by the House of Student Representatives Tuesday.

The first bill will allow for construction of a patio area near Frog Fountain that can be used for concerts and other activities, said Andrew Lowe, a freshman business major.

“This is a really cool project (that) more than anything promotes SGA’s name,” Lowe said. “This is not just going to affect students. It’s going to affect visitors, family members and friends that come to visit and see this square that says SGA on it.”

The patio will cover up an area where students have cut across the grass and left a dirt trail, said Tom Casey, chairman of the Permanent Improvements Committee.

The second bill that passed will finance the refurbishment of the World War I and World War II memorials in front of Reed Hall, said Candace Shelton, a junior political science major.

Also during the SGA meeting:

  • The budget for the 2003 fiscal year passed unanimously.
  • Blake Eason, chairman of the University Affairs Committee, presented the results of the committee’s survey.
  • Wednesday, students can participate in College Student for a Day by hosting a high school or middle school student, said Brad Thompson, SGA president.
