Letter to the editor
Actions of Rowe do not reflect feelings of others in fraternity
The gentlemen of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Lambda Epsilon
Chapter of Fort Worth, sincerely extend their sympathy for the inexcusable
destruction of property belonging to both of the gentlemen of Delta
Tau Delta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternities.
If the charges of arson brought against former
TCU student Vern Rowe are proven true, we will also offer our deepest
apologies over the regrettable incidents. Even though Rowe was a
member of Sigma Nu when the alleged crimes occurred, we fervently
wish it to be known that members of Sigma Nu do not condone such
ignominious deeds.
We had no prior knowledge of such intentions. Rowe
would have been acting independently, and any accomplices would
definitely not have been members of our fraternity, but friends
of his own.
Rowe had been under investigation within our fraternity
for many counts of questionable behavior as early as May 2000, and
rumors of arson only intensified those investigations until he was
formally expelled for private reasons from Sigma Nu Fraternity early
last fall.
Let it also be known that the brothers of Sigma
Nu in no way hindered Fort Worth officials in their investigations
as it would have directly contradicted our own efforts to find evidence
to remove him. We, unfortunately, knew only as much as the police
did in the matter. Rowe has betrayed the gentlemen of Sigma Nu,
and he is not our brother.
If Rowe is proven guilty, we only hope that Delta
Tau Delta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the rest of the TCU community
might forgive us the damage caused while he was still a member of
Sigma Nu. Being a Sigma Nu at TCU is not always easy, as we are
often misunderstood and seldom recognized, but we are honorable
men who do not stand for such blatant disregard for law and basic
decency.
Aaron Brown, senior computer science
major.
Commander of Sigma Nu Fraternity,
Lambda Epsilon Chapter, September to December 2000
