Sitting
on basketball court should inspire school pride
COMMENTARY
Chelsea Hudson
While the Athletics department is giving students better
seats at basketball games, they also need more students
to fill those seats.
Its
about time. The athletics department is planning to
move the student section in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum to
the floor during TCU basketball games.
This
is the ideal time for making this decision. We now have
a new head coach for mens basketball, and his
charisma and vision for our basketball program show
true promise.
The
idea of allowing students to stand on the court behind
their home team is just one way students can feel more
connected to their athletic team. In the past, students
may not have taken an active role in supporting their
teams because fans need to feel like an active part
of their teams successes. They want to know that
their presence and spirit makes a difference.
By
bringing our students closer to their team, the athletic
department is making a symbolic gesture that says to
students, We need you and you matter to us.
Students
will enjoy games more and keep coming back for the next
game and the next.
A
student section on the floor will also give our basketball
team a significant home court advantage. More student
support and attendance at games will strengthen our
athletic program as a whole.
The
change will cause a few fans to move seats, but the
supporters of our university are sure to want to encourage
more school spirit even if it means a seat change.
Clearly, allowing students to take their place on the
court is the right decision.
Since
the athletic department is doing its part to encourage
attendance, we need to hold up our end of the bargain.
The first home games for the mens and womens
basketball teams begin Nov. 22 at 5:15 p.m. We, as a
student body, need to show up wearing our purple and
showing our pride.
This
is going to be a special year for TCU basketball. Our
Lady Frogs won the conference championship last year
and only the same success is expected again. Our mens
basketball team is in a unique position to blow this
university away and we, as students, need to be a part
of this exciting momentum. Claim your court-side seat
next month.
